🍣 8 sharp reads about comms strategy

Hey, Rob here.

Every week, I share with the Salmon Crew a snapshot of some of the top resources I added to my swipe file. But I've noticed two things:

  1. The random curation feels nice, but is not that unique
  2. It's kinda just me doing the curating, which again – not unique

So, I've decided to mix things up in a couple of ways.

First, a more distinctive name: Bento Box. A themed collection of tasty links, so that you can go deeper with maximum context.

Second, something which I'll be doing soon: guest editions. Salmon Crew members will be able to share their own Bento Boxes. Yay!

To kick us off, I went back into the archives (by my estimates, some 3,000+ items in there now!) and pulled all the good bits I would share with anyone who asked me, "what's good about comms strategy?".

The below list is that. I hope you find it useful. Plus, stick around until the end, because there's also a fun new event coming real soon...

🍱 Bento Box: Comms Strategy Edition

  1. What if comms strategy didn't have to be so ultra-processed all the time?
  2. Pair with 66 deceivingly simple ways to completely screw up the job
  3. Still on the topic of consumables, we may not be able to unbake the cake of "big telly advertising as a default"
  4. And in fact, an excellent 'whodunnit' of the era might be when ideas suffer death by framework
  5. On the flip side, a lot of goodness and clarity emerges when you start with clear category entry points
  6. Or perhaps consider that you're better off creating a visual picture of the environments you might find people in
  7. Especially because we need to f*cking accept that different media environments imply very different cognitive modes
  8. But I know what you're really wondering: did all that Sydney Sweeney Great Jeans stuff deliver the goods?

👀 Want an even deeper taste profile?

We just announced a brand new live session with Sam Fowler, CSO of Craft Media, on how some of the most processed comms can provide strategists with some of the most anti-processed opportunities.

September 16th. 1pm BST. Google Meet. A Salmon Crew exclusive. If you'd like to come along, and get the recording after, join us below.

Keep swimming,

Rob

Hey crew, Rob here. Earned social media has been on my mind. So much so, I wrote a thing for WARC about it (link below). Complement with the following thoughts, which are saltier but born out of 15 years of experience: When we treat social as a channel, not an ecosystem, we give away our internal structures and politics, and call it strategy. We've codified best practices for paid and owned but not for earned, maybe because until now there wasn't an incentive to do so (or maybe it's not...
